Every April 22nd, we take the time to recognize and celebrate Earth Day. We must take action to Restore Our Earth, not just because we care about the natural world, but because we live on it. Across DSB1, we take action to support the Earth we live on daily. Please find out more about how to help your local community by visiting bit.ly/3mJcyjP and getting inspired by students in their efforts to #InvestinOurPlanet.
This year DSB1 schools received vermicomposters through the Northern Fruits and Vegetables Program from the Porcupine Health Unit. Vermicomposting is an efficient, low-maintenance, year-round composting option using Red Wigglers. In addition to being low-maintenance and unobtrusive, vermicomposters have environmental, educational, and financial benefits for schools. Vermicomposting can result in significant food waste diversion in schools, reducing strain on local landfills/waste management systems.
Students at Smooth Rock Falls Public School shared their excitement when they received their vermicomposter. Students learned about the red wigglers and learnt firsthand about the composting cycle.
